چکیده

We find that the infrared excess around HD 233517, a first-ascent red giant, can be explained naturally if the star possesses an orbiting, flared, dusty disk. We estimate that the outer radius of this disk is 45 AU and the total mass within the disk is 0.01M . We speculate that this disk is the result of the engulfment of a lowmass companion star that occurred when HD 233517 became a red giant. Subject headings: circumstellar matter — stars: mass loss

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Orbiting Hd 233517, an Evolved Oxygen-rich Red Giant

We report spectra obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope in the λ = 5 – 35 μm range of HD 233517, an evolved K2 III giant with circumstellar dust. For λ > 13 μm, the flux is a smooth continuum that varies approximately as ν. For λ < 13 μm, although the star is oxygen-rich, PAH features produced by carbon-rich species at 6.3 μm, 8.2 μm, 11.3 μm and 12.7 μm are detected along with likely broad...

Near-infrared imaging polarimetry of dusty young stars

We have carried out JHK polarimetric observations of eleven dusty young stars, by using the polarimeter module IRPOL2 with the near-IR camera UIST on the 3.8-m United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). Our sample targeted systems for which UKIRT-resolvable discs had been predicted by model fits to their spectral energy distributions. Our observations have confirmed the presence of extended pol...

SEDS OF FLARED DUST DISKS Radiation Transfer Model Versus 2-Layer Model

A radiation transfer model for the top-layer of a flared dust disk around a low mass star is presented. The disk structure, temperature distribution and spectral energy distribution are compared with the results of the analytical two-layer model of Chiang & Goldreich. We find that both, a proper iterative calculation of the main parameters and proper radiation transfer calculations, are importa...

Flared Disks and Silicate Emission in Young Brown Dwarfs

We present mid-infrared photometry of three very young brown dwarfs located in the ρ Ophiuchi star-forming region – GY5, GY11 and GY310 – obtained with the Subaru 8-meter telescope. All three sources were detected at 8.6 and 11.7μm, confirming the presence of significant mid-infrared excess arising from optically thick dusty disks. The spectral energy distributions of both GY310 and GY11 exhibi...
